As with most smartphones, it was only a matter of time before some one got a variant of linux running on the iphone.
The team over at “Linux on the iPhone” have gotten the linux 2.6 Kernel booting on the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and the 1st generation iPod Touch.
Right now the project is in the very early stages of development and linux is not yet very useful on the iPhone. This proof however that things are going in the right direction for the project.

What is working now:
- Framebuffer driver
- Serial driver
- Serial over USB driver
- Interrupts, MMU, clock, etc.

What does not work:
- Write support for the NAND
- Wireless networking
- Touchscreen
- Sound
- Accelerometer
- Baseband support

As this project progresses, more of the does not work items should be resolved.

A video demonstration of linux on iphone can be viewed here: tp://www.vimeo.com/2373142
